10/17 EPL Breakdown
The Clean Sheet is back following an international break for EPL Matchweek 5/38. This time around, both sites will carry all three games, which come in successive order. Because we have a trio of favorites and some depth on this slate, ownership should be a bit more spread out than usual.
Game One – Southampton at Chelsea – 10:00 a.m. ET
Things kick off with Chelsea at home against Southampton. The “Greatest American” Christian Pulisic, will be making his season debut, as injuries have held him out thus far.
He will start for the first time alongside the new additions Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, as a result, I like Chelsea here at home.
As some might point out, Southampton are coming off back to back clean sheets, however they were against Burnley and West Brom. This Chelsea team is a big step up from those bottom feeders in talent level. Don’t forget Reece James on DraftKings.
Game Two – Arsenal at Manchester City – 12:30 p.m. ET
Next up, we have Manchester City hosting Arsenal. Man City’s most important player Kevin De Bruyne will be out a few games. Both strikers Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus remain out. This certainly isn’t the same Man City side that we’re accustomed to seeing.
Riyad Mahrez will likely be taking over set piece duties in De Bruyne’s absence, so should be the chalk on DraftKings. Meanwhile, last time out we saw Raheem Sterling lead the line. Both Mahrez and Sterling are the central figures we are looking at, with Fernan Torres and Phil Foden supplementing the attack.
However, keep in mind that Manchester City is normally pretty lackluster without De Bruyne. I see this as a trap game of sorts for them against a much improved Arsenal team.
If looking to bet on any underdogs, I like Arsenal to win or draw (Currently at +165 on DraftKings Sportsbook) https://sportsbook.draftkings.com/r/sb/jetsfan303/US-CO-SB
A game stack or an Arsenal stack or two man with a combination of Pierre Emerick-Aubmeyang, Willian, and Alexandre Lacazette, makes sense as a large field tournament pivot.
Game Three – Manchester United at Newcastle – 3:00 p.m. ET
The late game on the 10/17 EPL slate features Manchester United travelling away to Newcastle. Head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer finds himself under a lot of pressure as Manchester United start the day 16 of 20 on the English Premier League Table.
Manchester United come in a -148 favorite and they are expected to treat this as if it’s a Champion’s League elimination game in terms of seriousness.
Forward Anthony Martial is suspended for this game and new addition, longtime PSG striker Edison Cavani is under a coronavirus clearance timeline prior to his arrival in Manchester.
This leaves Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood up front, with Bruno Fernandes serving as the creative force and occasional run ups from new acquisition Donny Van Der Beek, formerly of Ajax.
Given the fact that they are on the road and down Martial, I don’t like the return for the -148 odds on United here. With that said, they likely should win unless they’re going to continue to plummet to new early season lows.
If by any chance Alex Telles, just acquired from Porto is in the lineup, he is definitely in play on DraftKings. Although as of the time of writing he is not projected to start and I wouldn’t plan on it, just something to watch moving forward.
10/17 EPL Forwards
High – Riyad Mahrez, Timo Werner, Christian Pulisic, Raheem Sterling
Mid – Marcus Rashford, Pierre-Emerick Aubemeyang, Tammy Abraham, Alexandre Lacazette, Willian
Low – Mason Greenwood, Danny Ings, Callum Wilson, Bukayo Saka
High – Riyad Mahrez, Timo Werner, Christian Pulisic, Kai Havertz, Raheem Sterling, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Pierre-Emerick Aubemeyang
Mid- Phil Foden, Mason Greenwood, Alexandre Lacazette, Danny Ings, Willian
Low – Ferran Torres, Tammy Abraham, Donny Van Der Beek
On DraftKings, Mahrez is the cash play at the position as mentioned above.
You get a price dip from Kevin De Bruyne while Mahrez assumes the role on corner kicks and free kicks. The options in the high and mid ranges are very good and chances are you will need goals on this slate. So for tournaments, really all of them are in play.
High- Riyad Mahrez, Bruno Fernandes, Christian Pulisic, Timo Werner
Mid- Kai Havertz, Marcus Rashford, James Ward-Prowse, Willian, Phil Foden, Ferran Torres
Low- Jonjo Shelvey, Donny Van Der Beek, Jorginho, Ilkay Gundogan, Thomas Partey
FanDuel – Addressed above, as on FanDuel, forwards and midfielders are combined.
In the high range, Mahrez and Bruno Fernandes stick out. I would use Mahrez at forward and Bruno at midfield in cash games on DraftKings.
Both Van Der Beek and Chelsea penalty kick taker Jorginho are cheap on DraftKings as opposed to their FanDuel prices. I don’t mind using them as part of a stars and scrubs build. There are enough guys listed in the low range to mix it up. Jonjo Shelvey is likely the top choice as he will get Newcastle’s set pieces and Manchester United has been pretty terrible lately.
High- Reece James
Mid- Cesar Azpilicueta “likely in if no Chilwell”
Low- Hector Bellerin, Kyle Walker Peters
High – Reece James, Ben Chilwell
Mid- Jan Bednarak
Low- Jamal Lascelles, Javier Manquillo, Hector Bellerin
On DraftKings, lock in load Reece James, giving us at least a good portion of the set pieces on a heavily favored Chelsea team. Plus, he can easily grab an open field assist here just sending the ball in to some of the studs.
Ben Chilwell is a bit overpriced after one insane Chelsea debut game. I’d expect him to be closer to the player we saw at Leicester City on a regular basis. For the $5,000 if Cesar A. is in instead, I’ll likely pair him with James. Since that game is the first on the slate, we will have the lineup before lock.
On FanDuel, you can mix James or Chilwell “if in” into a tournament build but I’d mostly pay down using one of Lascelles/Manquillo considering that is the late game, so there is a natural swap there if one doesn’t start. As of the time of writing, both are projected in.
High – None
Mid – None
Low- Karl Darlow, Bernd Leno
Low- Karl Darlow, Bernd Leno
I don’t think Man City shuts out Arsenal, I love Chelsea but Kepa has been awful and will be replaced by new signing Edward Mendy once he’s available.
There’s not a lot to like here at goalie so I think you just punt and correlate with your lineup. For example, if I don’t have any Manchester United attackers, I might play Darlow and hope Newcastle pulls the upset, etc.
10/17 EPL Cash Plays
DraftKings – Riyad Mahrez, Bruno Fernandes, Reece James
FanDuel – Riyad Mahrez, Timo Werner, Christian Pulisic, Bruno Fernandes, Ferran Torres, Jamal Lascelles/Javier Manquillo
