Mile High Overview

The PGA Championship comes to Bethpage Black this weekend, and is going to demand great play by the players on this course.  Just a reminder, FanDuel is offering a full refund on all entries in their 2 biggest contests if Tiger Woods wins. I don’t see that as likely to happen, but hey, he’s Tiger Woods so.

Roster Construction Thoughts

Majors, fun stuff….they always make your line look like a million bucks. The key is to pick a core and stick to it.  Don’t try to expose to everyone, it won’t work.

Hole in One:

My pick to win

Brooks Koepka

Can we say duh?  Look, I don’t know how else to say this the guy is just in the mix for every major at this point.  Something about him shows up big for these tourney’s, and I can’t fade him anymore in them.  Course fit wise he’s fine, this course can favor longer hitters as long as they’re accurate, which he is.  He can putt, he’s got a great approach game, great chipping, great scrambling.  He’s a total package, and he amplifies all that in majors.  He’s also projected to be our highest owned golfer this week.

Excellent Picks, hopeful top 5’s

John Rahm / Jason Day / Xander Schauffele

Rahm and Day is a wash for me.  These 2 go hand in hand, both are fantastic players, with great form, great recent appearances in majors, and I fully expect to see both names in the top 10 by the weekends end.  If I had to pick one to win it all, it would be Day.  Day’s putting is so good that it can seperate him at times.  He’s truly one of the best, if not the best, putter on the tour right now.

Xander (X) is a young player with a massive chip on his shoulder.  He desperately wants to be considered in the same ways as other young players who have won majors…but the problem is he has won one …yet.  He hovered at Augusta…he’s won bigger tourneys before…can he finally cap one off with a PGA Champ?

Solid picks, hopeful top 10 finishes, outside chance of winning.

Matt Kuchar / Tony Finau / Patrick Cantlay

So the downfall here is these aren’t “major” type players.  They typically don’t win, but for their respective prices and potential upside this week it’s hard to ignore them.  I want to rule out Finau in almost every major, but he keeps piling up top 25 and top 10 finishes in them and it’s hard to ignore that.  Majors have a different feel, a different pressure…and some guys just step up during them.  Finau can be one of them.  Cantlay and Kuchar can kill this course with accuracy and precision, both can be deadly accurate when they’re on their game.

Aiming to hit the Top 25. Goal here isn’t to give you more expensive guys who are obvious, we want affordable guys who can hit top 25’s.

Henrik Stenson / Webb Simpson / Bubba Watson / Adam Scott

Just a whole crew of high upside plays here.   Wouldn’t shock me to see any one or all of them top 10 at the end of the week.  Henrik and Webb can be absolutely deadly with ball striking at times and accuracy.  Webb doesn’t really make too many mistakes which makes him a very safe play.  Bubba Watson has great recent form, despite feeling like a risky play, he’s simply not…he keeps just competing.  Adam Scott is a riskier pick in my opinion because while he has high upside, he’s also prone to a meltdown here and there.

Roster filling mid tier guys who probably won’t finish top 10 or maybe even top 25 but can help you win.

Louis Oosthuizen / Kevin Kisner / Charley Hoffman

Guys I’d only take a small GPP Flyer on, have a good possibility of busting and missing the cut.  Consider this your “punts” section, if you’re trying to jam in high dollar guys, these are some cheapies who could save your day.

Scott Piercy (not a fan, but he should be chalk) / Patton Kizzire / Brian Gay.
