The PLAYERS – PGA Picks

Basic Facts:

Essential Stat Categories: SG: Approach, GIR%, SG:OTT

Mile High Overview

The unofficial 5th Major is here, in its new date.  This new date should do 2 things.  1, the winds actually are expected to be a little less than they usually are in the original May time slot.  Additionally, since we aren’t up against summer like heat in Florida yet, the greens should be softer and more receptive.  This could lead to a lower scoring championship than we’re used to.  Guys who are amazing at Strokes Gained: Approach should do wonderful here.

Roster Construction Thoughts

I can’t plead with you enough that if you’re going to play this week stars and scrubs is not the winning method.  You’re going to want some nice balance.  So if you want a stud (JT, DJ, etc) pick 1, and then pick a corresponding punt to go with them.  After that the other 4 guys in your line should be balanced.

For DraftKings, the 8-10k region is amazingly loaded with some of the best talent you could ask for, so super balanced lineups on DK really could do some damage this weekend.

Hole in One:

My pick to win

Justin Thomas

Well if I believe that Strokes Gained: Approach is the absolute vital statistic this week, then I have to pick the guy leading the field and tour in approach so far this year.  Thomas has a rock solid history at TPC Sawgrass, has been playing really solid golf of late, and is desperate to punch in his first win of the season.  On top of it all this could be a real statement win for Thomas, who is on pace to be one of the best golfers of all time.  He has yet to claim a PLAYERS Championship, which is important.  This one is all about, as it says, the players themselves.  They love this event, and covet a win here.  Thomas has finished 2nd and 3rd in 2 recent events, and 30th in his most recent event.  He’s been on the cusp, and at the very least has a very safe floor.

Albatross:

Excellent Picks, hopeful top 5’s

Dustin Johnson / Francesco Molinari / Tommy Fleetwood

Dustin Johnson reminded a lot of people just how good he is in his most recent event, where he won in commanding fashion.  He’s starting to look like his dominant self again, which is trouble for opponents.  DJ has however been pretty clear about his struggles at Sawgrass.  This is not his favorite course by any measure, but after a rough start to his career at this course, he’s piled in back to back top 25 finishes.

Francesco Mollinari simply cannot be bet against right now.  He’s at a place in his career where he can compete to win literally any tournament he plays, as he just showed last week with a win at the Arnold Palmer.  Mollinari was dominant on his final round, coming from way behind to take the title when seemingly no one else wanted to earn it.  His tournament history here at Sawgrass will confuse the hell out of you, 3 top 10’s circled by 2 missed cuts in his last 5 appearances.  So let’s just hope last year was a fluke and we can count on another top 10, or better here.

Tommy Fleetwood is a man who desperately, and I mean desperately needs a statement win for his career.  The guy has an incredible amount of talent, and always hovers near the top of the scoreboard.  He struggles on Sunday’s which is an obvious concern for me.  However I have to like my 2nd best graded golfer here, and his amazing approach game.

Eagles:

Solid picks, hopeful top 10 finishes, outside chance of winning.

Webb Simpson / Adam Scott / Xander Schauffele

Webb Simpson shocked the world last year with a putting show for the ages to win this tournament (and me a ton of money as well, thanks Webb!).  He ran away with it so much that he shot a 73 on the final round and still won by 4 shots.  So he really hasn’t been anything special since that performance, but he is a phenomenal approach game player, and he tends to thrive big time when the greens are soft.

Adam Scott is one of the safest picks you can make all week based on tournament history. His last 6 appearances here have yielded no worse than 40th place.  His approach game and putting are key to his success.

Xander, oh Xander.  Will we get the Xander that has a massive killer instinct or the one who ho hums his way through the golf course.  He tends to step up when the competition is brightest, and this field has the top 51 players in the world in it.  Seems like a time for Xander to make a statement.  Did I mention in his lone appearance here he finished 2nd?

Birdies:

Aiming to hit the Top 25. Goal here isn’t to give you more expensive guys who are obvious, we want affordable guys who can hit top 25’s.

Matt Kuchar / Gary Woodland / Paul Casey

Kuchar and Woodland both had great spurts this year of playing fantastic golf, and both can be had for a relative discount this week, especially on Draftkings with Woodland at an embarrassing 7.5.  Woodland will end up in a ton of my lineups because of that fact alone.

Paul Casey I think is going to go very ignored this week, but shouldn’t.  He finally has started to show some great form and he has posted back to back top 25 finishes in his appearances at this event.

Pars:

Roster filling mid tier guys who probably won’t finish top 10 or maybe even top 25 but can help you win.

Ian Poultier / Marc Leishman / Lucas Glover

All have low floors but high ceilings.  Wouldn’t be shocked to see any of these names top 25 this weekend.

Bogeys:

Guys I’d only take a small GPP Flyer on, have a good possibility of busting and missing the cut.  Consider this your “punts” section, if you’re trying to jam in high dollar guys, these are some cheapies who could save your day.

Jhonathan Vegas (deep gpp flier on DK), Harold Varner, Jason Dufner, Alex Noren
